Throughout this blog I have discussed the various leadership theories and my thoughts about what leadership is in its context and my personal experiences. Having cannon-balled into leadership concepts and explored best practices for myself and the various groups, teams and roles I have taken on, I am still in awe at how much there still is to learn. Prior to college I had help leadership roles, but I am now aware that those were just superficial layers. Based on the leadership theories and “Good to Great”, I have learned to lead, is to choose the right individuals and then lead them in the right direction.

More significant, is choosing the right employees to drive a business, especially important in hospitality. Employees are the first and last experience with customers. They ultimately have the ability to make or break that experience. With that being said, this domino affect is created, and without the proper guidance, support, and development this front line can falter. While you may have someone that naturally excels, the saying, “you’re only as strong as your weakest link” is more than accurate.
Over the past years, the courses and simulation classes that allow us to test out our leadership abilities have made me more self aware, they have helped me approach leadership in ways never though my personality would bend towards…flexibility! The line of work and life should be walked in balance, and I am proud to say I am closer to the line than I’ve ever been before. Leadership is a topic and study that is endlessly revolving. There is so much to be gained as I enter my professional career, that I can learn and contribute to a new team, and I am thrilled to see where this new journey takes me. And as I mentioned, leadership isn’t something that will go away, so although I am transitioning I know I’ll be seeing more of it soon.
