Leadership & Me

My name is Rebecca Frilot; I am a Senior at San Diego State University perusing a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management with an emphasis in Meetings and Events.

Thinking about a personal leadership philosophy was really hard, because in all honesty if it weren’t for the following three things I wouldn’t have a path. To Experience. To Learn. And to Teach. Without the exceptional support of family, friends, professors, people we walk by and never get to know, or even the occasional road raging driver next to you; (and lets face it we've all seen and/or been one) those individuals touch every part of our lives. Take for instance the TED Talk, Everyday Leadership. It wasn't until a fellow classmate pointed out that the little moments could have such huge "AHAH" impacts! And for this point I hit points 1 & 2. To experience through someone else, to see perspective other than my own. And to learn, be reminded that I am not all knowing...

To successfully lead, I believe you have to step out of comfort, out of routine, and be receptive to what others have to offer. Over the past year I was encouraged to step out of my normal routine, to listen more and speak less. To take a more submissive role and see what others are capable of; and honestly it was the most rewarding and transforming experience I’ve had. Ronald Reagan said, "The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things." and I'll give it to him, he was absolutely right!

Identifying greatly with Reagan and Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken", (yeah I used to be a fan of GPS) I have found that taking the road traveled might not always be the best, or even the easiest. Pulling from both of these bright men, the two components of leadership that I aspire to grow with are in a never-ending journey to experience and learn from others. Secondly, that as a leader, to step aside and give autonomy to the team that chooses to follow me; because perhaps the road less traveled, their road is truly magnificent.

With that being said, I look forward to sharing the many "lollipop moments" (watch video in the video tab, it's worth it I swear!) to come, the learning experiences gained from my peers and the insight I may provide to others on their leadership adventure! Feel free to click away at the sight, take the road less traveled and find something that speaks to you!
